School and non-profit youth groups are encouraged to apply by May 1, for $1,000 youth camping grants being offered by the Lassen Park Foundation (LPF). Since 1996, the foundation's Youth Camping Program has provided grants to northern California school and youth organizations for camping trips to Lassen Volcanic National Park. Through these grants and resulting opportunities for discovery hikes, environmental education activities and science experiments, at risk youth are able to enrich their understanding of the park eco-system and complex web of life.
Last year, LPF awarded 16 camping grants and plans to increase the grant number for 2013. The grants pay for transportation, food and equipment costs for a three to five day trip to the Crag's Campground, in Lassen Volcanic National Park. LPF donations also underwrite the services of a seasonal National Park Service ranger who leads fun outings for the children.
The foundation is helping to build a new and expanded youth camping facility in Lassen Volcanic National Park. The project is slated to begin with pre-construction activities in 2013, with facility completion in 2016. If you'd like to help support the youth camping grant program or new Youth Camping Project, please contact Martha McCoy, at martha@lassenparkfoundation.org.
