Park Superintendent to Lead Lassen Volcanic Wilderness Walks

Posted August 6, 2018

Lassen Volcanic National Park Superintendent Jim Richardson will lead Wilderness Walks on Sat., Aug. 11 as an alternative, less strenuous, hike during the annual Reach the Peak Hike-A-Thon.

The newly added Wilderness Walks will travel “off trail” across a gentle saddle away from the Lassen Peak Trail and include instruction from Superintendent Richardson on how to properly hike in wilderness, using “Leave No Trace” principals. The 50-minute Wilderness Walks begin at 8:30, 9:30, 10:30 and 11:30 a.m. and the Hike-A-Thon begins at 8 a.m., all leading from the Lassen Peak trailhead.

“Park visitors are understandably hesitant to hike in the backcountry, because they don’t want to create new trails or don’t know how to do it safely,” said Superintendent Richardson. “These Wilderness Walks will show how to do it responsibly and enjoyably, while also providing an informative, easier and fun alternative to the Lassen Peak hike.”

The walks were added so that hikers who might opt out of hiking to the summit would have another way to participate in the annual event that benefits the national park. Walkers and hikers can register to participate in either event at lassenparkfoundation.org.

The Walk and Hike are part of Lassen Volcanic’s annual Day-in-the-Park celebration of the national park’s anniversary. Also planned is a BBQ lunch at the Loomis Museum ($13 – 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.) to be hosted by the Anderson Rotary.

Proceeds from the day’s activities benefit the philanthropic work of the Lassen Park Foundation including: improving trails and visitor experiences, providing camping opportunities for underprivileged youth and conducting supplementary scientific research and wildlife protection.
