New Youth Campground Underway

Posted February 4, 2014

The Lassen Park Foundation and Lassen Volcanic National Park are teaming together to build a new camping facility which will provide greater opportunities for youth groups to camp, explore and enjoy Lassen. Crags Campground will be reconstructed over the next three years and converted to a permanent youth camp by 2016, in time for the park’s 100th Anniversary. The need has never been greater. In 2013, the Foundation funded 27 youth groups with over 450 children and their leaders to camp at the park. For many kids, it is the very first time they have camped or even visited a national park. The new campground will double the capacity of the existing facility and allow more youth groups to come without the need to bring all their own equipment. Planned improvements will also expand the camping season by three months and increase the length of stay by providing more weather-proof, comfortable tent cabins, picnic shelters, and showers.

The Foundation has set an ambitious goal of raising $640,000 by summer 2014 with the National Park Service providing the remaining $230,000 for the project. Please join us in this capital campaign so we can serve more at-risk and underserved youth. We welcome donations of any size for the “Crags Youth Campground”.
